A Gift For Father’s Day

For the American holiday of Father’s Day this year, I will share with you a number of free online tools which help trace your roots back to your home nation.

To begin, you will need a modern computer, available at your local library if you do not have one at home, work or school. It is necessary for this computer to be connected to high-speed Internet and a printer, so you may print and review images you find.

The important rule about this kind of research is to be sure websites you visit are reputable sources of historical or genealogical information, and that you avoid paying for any memberships, pictures, or information. It is very common for websites to request you to register, to gain access to their records, and in the registration, they ask for your real name, sometimes address and phone as well as email address. If you have not signed up for something online before, please, PLEASE, work with a partner, relative, or librarian who has, and can help you to achieve success without revealing sensitive information about yourself online.

That said, a great starting place, available free in any computer’s web browser, is  EllisIsland.org, maintained by the Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation, which asks online users to register, but does not charge to search, locate, and view (or save to one’s computer) the passenger records, ship manifest, and often even shares images of the ship on which one’s ancestor sailed.

Another great online source with a free level of access, once registered, is Ancestry.com, which allows you to use a charted approach to describe your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, children, grandchildren, siblings, by name only and create clickable or printable genealogy charts. You can even upload your pictures or letters of your relatives if you want to store them as a project. In my personal family, we had a few ancestry buffs that had many binders full of black and white photocopies as well as many dog-eared, hand-copied notes. The technology on Ancestry.com allows this kind of tracing without the confusion of pages and notebooks.

A number of other tools exist, but the best of these is Google.com, currently the most popular search engine, a website that exists only to help you find and locate information in other websites. By typing information you locate on EllisIsland.org or Ancestry.com, above, into Google.com, you can locate other places where such things exist online or may be fully described in detail. The best way to explain this process is to share the story of how I traced my paternal great-grandfather’s immigration to the United States on the 100th anniversary of his entry to the United States:

In 2008, I sat down at Internet Explorer, my computer’s web browser, and typed “Ancestor Search” into the Google.com search field and clicked the [Search] button. Among the many results that popped up, one of the first was EllisIsland.org, which seemed a logical place to begin. I clicked on the link for Ellis Island and, after clicking a few links and learning the history of Ellis Island, reviewing some historical photos and more, I discovered a [Passenger Search] feature.

I had always heard the anecdote of my family’s name, Dykhouse, as beginning in 1908 when my grandfather had arrived at Ellis Island as a Dutch immigrant who queued patiently in long lines to arrive at the table where he was asked to state his name, in order to better match him to the ship’s manifest from whence he came. “Berend Dijkhuizen,” was his reply, holding out his immigration request papers. The official opposite him glanced over his papers, stamped them, grunting, and then with a warm handshake, announced, “Welcome, Ben Dykhouse!” This, it turns out, was the name we would use in America from then on.

Knowing the ship’s manifest would likely show his original name, and the date sometime in 1908, I searched on the EllisIsland.org [Passenger Search] feature until I had located his name, arriving in December, 1908, one hundred years earlier from the time I sat quietly researching a man who had passed away before I was even born. This was my lineage, something I had only heard of in passing conversations in childhood, but here was the truth of the matter free and clear, a freighter named the Statendam, which had originally come from Russia, with the moving tale of many Jewish passengers fleeing the upheaval of the time. The Statendam, a Dutch ship, had ported in Rotterdam, taking on Dutch travelers as well before arriving in New York City, where all the passengers disembarked, hoping to begin a new life in a new nation.

Seeing the ship’s manifest had been saved as an online photograph, I was immediately touched. I clicked the images and saw what looked to be a very clear scan of a ship’s book, declaring the names of each passenger, their stated destination, home country, and the dates of their arrival on board. I glanced through the pages, amazed that I could see the signature of a relative I had never met, yet without whom I would not exist!

With more research, I learned that the EllisIsland.org website had images of what the facility in the New York harbor looked like in the early 1900s, even an image of the ship The Statendam. I returned to the Google.com search engine website and searched for pictures of this ship, discovering another website, an unofficial fan’s web page for Holland-America Lines ship histories that was chock full of images; black and white photographs of the Statendam, color artist’s paintings for company literature in the late 19th century, even a blue-and-white square picture of the Statendam’s souvenir tile, in the style of Delft pottery collected in the period. So many moving images and stories.

By saving copies of all these files, I was able to construct a meaningful collage of the images, text, and dates of the ship, the immigration, and my Great Grandfather, and I launched it, as one would with a ship, in time for father’s day, 100 years after his arrival.

ELLIS ISLAND

It has been more than a century since the “Golden Doors” of Ellis Island first opened to immigrants in search of the American dream. Both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty have become powerful symbols of the freedom and opportunity that awaited millions of men, women, and children from around the world. Who could possibly have imagined the notoriety that would someday surround many of these passengers….

In many cases, the contributions of an individual immigrant are known only to their family and friends. In some cases, however, passengers arriving through Ellis Island would achieve recognition for contributions in American business, medicine, government, sports, entertainment, and a variety of other areas.

This particular manifest is a small sampling of notable Ellis Island arrival – some immigrants, more especially traveler Number 30, Berend Dijkhuizen. By looking and remembering, you may find a strong similarity to your own family story. We hope you enjoy this example of American immigration history.

Increasingly, for instance, you outsource when possible.  It is predictable, then, that ten years from now a company will outsource all work that does not have a career ladder up to senior management. To get productivity, you have to outsource activities that have their own senior management. Believe me, the trend toward outsourcing has very little to do with economizing and a great deal to do with quality….

Relations between organizations are changing just as fast as relations between organizations and the people who work for them.  The most visible is “outsourcing,” in which a company, a hospital or a government agency turns over an entire activity to an independent firm that specializes in that kind of work….In another ten or fifteen years, organizations may have outsourced all work that is “support”….This will mean that in many organizations a majority of people working might not be employees of that organization but employees of an outsourcing contractor.

“That’s Not Dutch”

Growing up in the Midwest of the United States, both sets of my grandparents often spoke to each other, and often to us children in a foreign tongue as well as in English. Visiting their homes was such a joy as a little boy. My mother’s parents lived in Grandville, my father’s, in Grand Rapids. In fact, in grade school, I remember marveling at the map of Michigan, gazing over cities like Grand Blanc and Grand Traverse Bay, assured that each was a city where grandparents live. Later I learned this wasn’t always true.

My mother’s parents, and my great aunts and uncle, often spoke in broken language at the dinner table, commenting when food was delicious, “Smaak Lekker,” or quieting us loud kids at the dinner table with some curt command in ‘Dutch.’

Growing up in Michigan, I was always fascinated by my ‘home country’ of the Netherlands. My fantasies were not of visiting far-off Russia, which I heard about every night on the TV news, not of the holy land of Jerusalem like in my grandmother’s living room Bible, not even of Mexico, that ‘exotic’ land south of our borders that our church missionaries visited.

No, I was fantasizing of Holland, which, as a child, I was certain was a land of windmills, of wooden shoes, and of delicious milk chocolate letters every holiday season. “When I am old enough to travel,” I used to daydream, “I will see Europe.”

Once graduated from college, I had been to Mexico briefly and the United Kingdom twice. But I had never been to visit my ‘home country.’ Now, with a salary, a job and paid vacation time, I was exhilarated. I made reservations, saved my nickels and dimes, and counted down the days until my trip to Holland. Having flown to England, I was prepared for a long flight in cramped quarters with a reasonably flat meal of dried, cooked meat of some kind, fish or small fowl.

Imagine my surprise when the KLM flight was delightful! A salmon dish served several hours into the trip warmed me enough to drift off peacefully, waking only in the hours of the early morning as we landed at Schiphol Airport. The flight to the Netherlands was only a little longer in hours than the flight when I had visited the United Kingdom, but the difference in atmosphere was extraordinary.

The first visit I made to England, it had been strange in the same way that being born in Connecticut made New York City seem familiar and Los Angeles a strange new world. A little different, but you got used to it. Schiphol, within seconds, was like being on another planet. I can honestly say it was like being in Legoland. I wandered for hours.

Eventually, the novelty of such a European place wore off on a Yankee like me, and I loaded onto the train that shuttled me along with the other tourists and global commuters down through the most brief and intriguing suburbs to the beautiful old train station towering at the entry square to the city. Out poured all of us gawkers, to our first sight of Amsterdam.

The square was a veritable bazaar of T-shirt vendors, sandwich board-wearing advertisers for the marijuana dens, the red light district’s offerings and worse… I picked an arbitrary direction and marched off away from the fray.

Amsterdam is a wonderful layout, as if imagined by the divine and then built and rebuilt by each generation’s finest craft workers, reclaimed and gilded every generation better and better. It is as if the roads are spokes on a wheel, radiating out and along the canals that stretch from the center of the city, by the train depot. Off I set, in search of a shop to try out my ‘Dutch.’

Seven or eight blocks away from the train station, I caught my breath and ducked into a South African Café. I wandered up to the bar, helped myself to a menu, took a deep breath, ready to speak ‘Dutch.’

(Hello) I said, (Good Morning). The girl behind the counter gave me a blank stare. (Good Morning), I repeated. Blank stare. She politely reached out a hand and offered, “Do you speak English?”

“Yes,” I responded, “do you speak Dutch?”

“Yes,” she replied, “but what you’re speaking, that’s not Dutch.”

“What is it?” I asked. “I don’t know,” she said, “but that’s not Dutch.”

Puzzled, I perused the menu, finally selecting a sandwich of Zebra meat. I was incredulous that such a thing could be eaten, much less enjoyed, but the English-speaking South African Dutch girl served up my first European lunch on an open-faced sandwich with little stripes of mayonnaise, to boot!

It wasn’t until a week’s travel through Den Haag, a wonderful walking tour of Keukenhof Gardens, and many train rides later, when I arrived in Groningen, ready to visit my family’s little village of Ten Boer, where my surname originates, that I learned the ‘Dutch’ I had learned growing up was, in fact, Frisian.

Frisian (Frysk) language, spoken in Friesland (Fryslân), is common to the north of the Netherlands. The language is usually known as West Frisian outside of the Netherlands, to distinguish it from the closely related Frisian languages of Saterland Frisian and North Frisian in Germany.

How Can We Co-Opt the Competition?

Making the transition from a decade of work as a mortgage broker to a fresh start working for a banking direct lender could have been a real challenge. Instead, it was an opportunity to grow market share.

The Fed   After working for mortgage brokers from Chicago to New York, I recently started a new contract for an entity I had never worked for directly as a loan officer before: a bank.
While in most arenas, being promoted to Euro Mortgage Bankers was a step up for me— lower pricing, faster closings, direct access to underwriting and lenders— in another way, I was unsure. How could I go to loyal clients and Realtors who had known my dedication to my previous mortgage brokerage?
The answer came in a way I couldn’t have expected: working for  the bank meant I could sell loans not just t o my end consumers buying homes, refinancing their property, and not just through Realtors who could recommend me, but also sell our loan products to my competition!
The very mortgage brokers I had competed with for so many years, and many homes, could now purchase directly from me at a discount and I could be rewarded for setting up the relationships! This was a true win, and more than a third of my initial success stories have been in this manner.
To think, I could have continued only direct selling and not even noticed!

Distilling Innovation with YouTube.com

When competitive challenges mount, the best leverage in many small companies is innovation and the ability to implement change more quickly and with better results than in large organizations.

When I was considering ways to double  ClickAnnArbor.com, my small team of Realtors in sales and in size of the workforce, many fleeting ideas seemed solid. What can a small firm offer that bigger competitors can’t?

Change and technology.

Since the mid-1980s, real estate sales firms have been using technology that puts panoramic views of homes online in what is now called a “virtual tour.” Most Realtors provide this as part of a package in home selling services.

My firm, ClickAnnArbor.com, pioneered the use of low-cost, high-quality digital video technology to replace the “computer nerdy” feel of virtual tours with a newsy YouTube video. This innovation allowed us to become the fastest-growing real estate company in the nation’s slowest-selling state!

Today, real estate agents from Maine to California use YouTube for a much more robust view of property.

When Do We Challenge the Status Quo?

When faced with a budget crisis beyond proportion and mounting promotion and industry trade show demands, one company stood up to adversity and made a new name for itself by spending smarter.Compass

While working for Virtual Systems, a Point-of-Sale (POS) software client, I learned that one of the annual budget items was $275,000 spent on a single trade show for the POS industry. The sales and marketing teams always put a lot of planning, money and thought into the show, and almost always came home hungry, with little to show for it.

The reason: The show was almost sold out with competing POS companies, all working to out-do each other’s booths, presentations, giveaways— all the traditional trade show avenues. It was time to put an end to this cycle.

By recommending that the client send the sales team to the show on the floor, but not invest in a booth in the “Me Too” contest this industry expo had turned into, we freed up over $225,000 that was then invested into three other trade shows attended by the company’s key clients: One in gift shops, one in bookstores, and one in pharmaceutical retail. In each convention, they were now the only POS company on the floor. The result: Sales growth of more than $ 3 million in new orders.
